Pediatric Chiropractor in Livermore, CA: Specialized Chiropractic Care for Babies & Children
When your baby consistently looks in one direction, struggles with tummy time, develops a flat spot, or seems uncomfortable in certain feeding positions, it's reasonable to wonder whether something physical is contributing.
Babies can't tell us that turning their neck one direction feels harder than the other.
Instead, they show us through their movement patterns, positioning, feeding preferences, and development.
If you're searching for a pediatric chiropractor in Livermore, CA, The Well Chiropractic & Lactation Support provides chiropractic care specifically focused on babies, children, and families.
Dr. Kara Rangel is both a Doctor of Chiropractic and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), allowing feeding mechanics and musculoskeletal function to be evaluated together when appropriate.
Why Would a Baby See a Pediatric Chiropractor?
Parents bring babies to my Livermore office for many different concerns.
Common reasons for an evaluation include:
Head-turning preference
Torticollis
Body tension
Tongue Tie / Oral Dysfunction
Reflux
Constipation
Difficulty with tummy time
Plagiocephaly or flat-head concerns
Asymmetrical movement
Difficulty comfortably turning the neck
Feeding-position preferences
Preference for one breast
General concerns about movement or mobility
The goal is not to assume every symptom requires chiropractic treatment.
The first step is determining how your baby is actually moving and functioning.
Baby Always Looking to One Side?
A persistent head preference is one of the most common things I evaluate in infants.
You may notice your baby:
Almost always looks right
Almost always looks left
Sleeps with their head turned the same direction
Has difficulty turning toward one side
Develops a head tilt
Becomes frustrated when encouraged to look the opposite direction
Feeds better when positioned one way
Begins developing a flat spot
Even subtle asymmetry is worth paying attention to.
A baby doesn't necessarily need a severe restriction before differences in movement begin influencing positioning.
Pediatric Chiropractic for Torticollis in Livermore
Torticollis involves an abnormal head or neck position and can be associated with differences in cervical range of motion and muscle function.
When evaluating a baby with suspected torticollis, I may assess:
Neck rotation
Lateral neck movement
Head tilt
Muscle tension
Head preference
Shoulder and trunk movement
Tummy-time mechanics
Overall symmetry
Head shape
Treatment recommendations depend on what we find.
Home exercises and positioning are also an important part of care because what happens during the other hours of your baby's day matters.
Pediatric Chiropractic and Flat Head Concerns
When a baby repeatedly rests on the same area of their head, positional flattening can develop.
This is commonly called plagiocephaly.
The question I want to answer is:
Why does your baby keep returning to that position?
If your baby has difficulty comfortably turning away from the flattened side, simply repositioning their head over and over may not address the reason they prefer that position.
Evaluating neck mobility, muscle tension, head preference, tummy time, and overall movement can help us determine what may be contributing.
Babies should still be placed on their backs for sleep in accordance with safe-sleep recommendations. Repositioning and exercises should be performed when appropriate while baby is awake and supervised.
Feeding Is a Whole-Body Activity
Feeding isn't performed by the mouth alone.
Your baby needs to coordinate their tongue, jaw, lips, cheeks, neck, and body while sucking, swallowing, and breathing.
A baby who has difficulty comfortably rotating their neck may feed differently depending on position.
Parents sometimes notice:
Baby prefers one breast
One breastfeeding position works better
Baby pulls away on one side
Baby becomes frustrated when positioned a certain way
Latch seems different depending on the breast
Bottle feeding is easier in one position
Because I am both an IBCLC and pediatric chiropractor, I can evaluate both feeding and body mechanics when they're overlapping.
What Does Pediatric Chiropractic Care Look Like?
Chiropractic care for an infant should not simply look like a smaller version of adult chiropractic care.
Your baby's evaluation and treatment are adapted to their age, size, development, and individual findings.
Depending on the child and examination, care may include:
Gentle chiropractic techniques
Gentle joint mobilization
Soft-tissue work
Range-of-motion exercises
Stretching
Strengthening
Tummy-time modifications
Positioning strategies
Parent education
Home exercises
Parents are an important part of the process.
I want you to understand what we're working on and what you can safely do at home to support your baby's progress.
